D&B would not be the same without Drumsound & Bassline Smith (aka Andy Wright, Benjamin Wiggett and Simon Bassline Smith). Together the trio have body-slammed dancefloors from Derby  to Durban and entrenched themselves as three of the finest drum’n’bass tastemakers on the planet courtesy of the blue chip label Technique Recordings – an imprint that celebrated 10 years of killer dancefloor joints in 2009.

The magic has been bubbling ever since Wright and Wiggett met Bassline Smith at one of Derby’s mentalist Technique club nights in the summer of 1998. The Drumsound pair had been crafting beats for a year, having originally started as a crew of six artists, while Bassline Smith had carved out a reputation as one of D&B’s most influential players, with a career stretching back to the early ‘80s.

Together, they enjoy an impressive arsenal of diversity that’s ensured their place atop the D&B scene for over a decade. A peep through Wright’s background and you’ll find he’s a classically trained musician with a strong background in indie rock – an ideal platform for harnessing the energetic groove that makes Drumsound & Smith’s productions slide over the dancefloor. His Drumsound compadre Wigget has been a diehard D&B head since the womb, while also tipping his hat to his Jamaican roots. Veteran Bassline Smith has been a funk and soul connoisseur for over 25 years and knows his way around a dancefloor blindfolded
As Drumsound & Bassline Smith they’ve enjoyed a firestarting musical synergy that’s played a pivotal role in taking drum’n’bass to the next level and carved out a patented ‘Technique sound’ in the process. In 1998 they were asked to complete a CD of samples for the respected Loopmasters Series laying testament to their original approach to beat construction.

From the music industry’s finest tastemakers, to the die-hard junglists populating clubs and festivals each weekend, one thing rings out loud and clear; no one can get enough of Drumsound & Bassline Smith’s floor-burning sound.

In 2004 their ‘Odyssey’ banger was judged Mixmag’s 10th best all-round dance anthem of the year and hit no.1 on the UK charts. The trio have also issued a string of stormers on the most respected imprints in D&B, dropping cuts on LTJ Bukem’s Good Looking Records, Bryan G’s V Recordings and Grooverider’s seminal Prototype Records.

Drumsound & Bassline Smith are also in hot demand from the most respected heads at Radio One and 1Xtra and enjoy regular flogging on the airwaves from Fabio & Grooverider, Zane Lowe, Mista Jam, Annie Nightingale and Annie Mac. The trio are aone of the few set of artists to complete multiple mixes for the famed Radio One, with a whisper of a request to complete a coveted Essential Mix in 2010. “We love them and have been supporting them since day one,” Mac tells.

As their popularity begins to steamroll, so do the requests. Drumsound & Smith have issued re-rubs of VV Brown’s ‘Leave’ at the request of Warner/Universal and Fugative – Supafly (Drumsound & Bassline Smith Remix) for Ministry of Sound. Radio One’s Annie Mac also personally requested the crew complete a remix of Chipmunk’s no.1 anthem ‘Oopsy Daisy’ for her Mash Hitz segment. They also achieved an unlikely feat when they made the Eastenders theme dope, completing a re-rub for the E20 Music Competition set up by the BBC.

No surprise that demand has seen the guys independently tour all corners of the globe setting the standard across America, Canada, Australia, France, Italy, Germany, Russia, Iceland, Spain, Holland, Sweden, Ireland, Czech Republic, Brazil, Poland, Switzerland, Uruguay, Norway and Italy. Further to this, they’ve represented at UK parties Fabric Live, Tranz-mission, Detonate, Slamming Vinyl, One Nation and Movement.

In 2009, Drumsound & Bassline Smith reached a milestone when their Technique Recordings imprint hit its 10 year anniversary of releases. With a philosophy firmly focussed on issuing tunes to satisfy the next generation of music lovers, the label celebrated its birthday with the critically acclaimed ’10 Years Of Technique’ LP which included the hits ‘Can You Feel It’ Clap Your Hands’ and ‘Law Of The Jungle’ and reached no.1 on the BBC Radio One and 1xtra charts at the end of November 2009.

With unstoppable momentum, the next 12 months are set to be massive for Drumsound & Bassline Smith. Always looking to evolve their sound, the trio will begin a new album project that will incorporate dubstep and electro influences, along with their trademark D&B sound. And those craving a blazing dancefloor experience shouldn’t go wanting either, with the trio’s busy touring schedule set to see them zigzag across the planet.

2011 has seen one of their remixes at no1 with DJ Fresh’s ‘Louder’ & two of their own singles, Freak & the current one Close both been Radio 1 playlisted & Record Of The Week for Mistajam & Zane Lowe. Other remixes this year include Moby – After which dropped in October 2011

2012 With the likes of Example, DJ Fresh, Wolfgang Gartner, Laidback Luke and Yasmin on the roster of Ministry of Sound, they have the biggest line-up of dance artists in the world, and with Utah Saints vs Drumsound & Bassline Smith’s ‘What Can You Do For Me’ they’ve got the soundtrack to kick start 201.

Devan Gray, AKA Bladerunner, based in the East of England, is one of the most highly respected Drum & Bass artists of this era. His talents were spotted back in 2004 by the legendary Ray Keith ,he was signed to Dread Recordings and remixed jungle classics ‘Renegade Terrorist’, ‘The Chopper’ and ‘Dark Soldier’. His debut album Analog Bass was released in 2009 which lead to further remix duties on tracks such as ‘The Lighter’ for DJ SS on Formation Records and ‘Sound Control’ by Randall and Andy C. Since then this DJ/Producer has more than paid back Ray for his support with numerous modern day anthems, the latest being ‘Feel for You’ and ‘Spartan Law’ which appeared on Andy C’s hugely popular mix CD ‘Nightlife 5’.
Bladerunner’s new school, forward thinking take on the classic jungle sound has won him legions of fans from heads to producers alike with tracks such as ‘Love is Gone’ on Philly Blunt, Feel For You and his rework of Marvellous Cain’s ‘The Hitman’
Bladerunner has been tearing up dance floors globally for over twelve years now and he showcases many of his original compositions and exclusive remixes with consistently heavy beats and punishing basslines. As well as regular airplay on BBC Radio 1, and appearances on 1Xtra and D&B Arena TV, Bladerunner has also featured in ATM Magazine with a cover mix CD. Hits such as ‘Snake Fist’ on Fabio’s Creative Source and ‘Back to the Jungle’ on Critical Records topped the BBC Radio 1 Drum & Bass charts and still tear dancefloors apart the world over whilst more recently Bladerunner has signed’ Old Times’ for his second release on Ram Records sister label Program. Support for Bladerunner tracks comes from all the A-list DJ’s on the scene including Andy C, Friction, Ray Keith, Fabio, DJ SS, Bailey, Bryan G, Randall and more.

One of the UK’s finest DJ/Producers and co-founder of Formation Records, now celebrating it’s 25 year Anniversary making it the longest running Drum&Bass label on the planet. DJ SS aka Leroy Small is an original breakbeat pioneer who has made an immense contribution to today’s drum & bass sound.

SS is one of the very select DJ / Producers who has been there right from the start, due to the hard work and dedication that he puts into his music.

When the hardcore scene exploded SS was there and hasn’t looked back. He and his partner Eidris started promoting their own parties called Total Kaos every Friday in their hometown of Leicester. They also put on one of the first large indoor parties at Donnington Park in the summer of 91. It was an amazing success and 6000 people danced till dawn.

DJ SS himself born and bred in Leicester is a self-taught scratch DJ and found fame scratching his way through the era along with break-dancing his way on the streets of Leicester. He progressed onto the “rave scene” and was one of the first on the worldwide scene to DJ his own produced tracks. Things moved quickly from there – SS taught himself how to produce a high calibre of music and also coached others to produce to equally high standards.

DJ SS has an enormous list of tracks and used various aliases. Over the years he’s had countless releases on Formation Records as well as doing remix work for other artists. He has released such tracks as ‘The Psycho E.P’, ‘Rhythm For Reasons’, ‘Breakbeat Pressure’, the Drum & Bass anthem ‘Black’, with the highlight being ‘ Lighter’ which was Formation Records best seller, reaching the number 1 spot in the Music Week dance chart and reaching number 68 in the music charts. It is a track that has remained incredibly popular and still continues to be played years on.

Not only has his label Formation during the years had many big tunes released, they have also had many big DJ/producers release records on the label. The list is strong, big and endless including Carl Cox, Grooverider, Shy FX, Ray Keith, Bryan Gee, Frost, Roni Size, Krust, Kenny Ken, Ratty, Matrix, John B, Mickey Finn, Twisted Individual and Distorted Minds.

In between this huge success he has also been the driving force behind some of the finest talent now established within the scene, his most recent sensation arriving in the form of Twisted Individual, who had made a huge impact on the scene with releases on Formation Records and sister labels Reformed and New Identity, as well as his debut album Tooled Up. He has also convinced Zen, old friend of Twisted Individual, to take the plunge and move from London to Leicester to join the Formation team after several releases on 5HQ Recordings and the last couple of years has seen his debut appearance on Formation Records with Minefield as part of the 100th release, and sister labels Reformed and New Identity.  Adding to the successful list of a&r projects, DJSS is also responsible for launching the careers of successful artists like John B, Greenlaw, Multi Platinum selling artists Nero, and is continuing on that path bringing on new blood.

Fast forward to 2015 and we saw Formation events team up with the UK’s premier event company, Outbreak Festival to host Formation & World of Drum&Bass Arena’s at their massives. Simultaneously DJSS has built his World of Drum&Bass brand to become the biggest Drum&Bass events in Russia averaging over 4-6,000 people per show.

As the 25 years of Formation arrives, DJ SS enters a new chapter launching his next concept, Bass Disciples. This Gospel&Bass movement will bridge the gap of church and Bass music collide on a path of worship through a genuine music platform.

Whistler Junglists Mix Series Episode 02 – Vixate

Vixate was born from a love of all music, but especially drum and bass. Originally from Suffolk, United Kingdom, she has made snowy Whistler her forever dream home. She got into DJing after curiosity got the better of her and thought that using DJ controllers and eventually, turntables, can’t be that much more tricky than trying to DJ at house parties using nothing but a laptop and two tabs open on YouTube… well turns out there is a bit more to it, but she is loving music more than ever.
The second instalment in the Whistler Junglists Mix Series showcases her growing skills as a young DJ. Beyond music, Vixate is also an established Graphic Designer and works for the local newspaper in Whistler, The Pique News Magazine. She also loves drinking a myriad of different teas, 2+ hour bubble baths, chocolate and sleeping-in, oh and snowboarding of course!
