Ed Solo is the producer’s producer, an expert studio guru whose sublime engineering skills are equalled only by his nack for a booty-bouncing hook and an ability to throw down on the
turntables. When it comes to pouring on the bass frequencies, Ed’s skills are unrivalled, whether the tune in question be a killer dubstep cut, an upfront slice of drum ‘n’ bass, a booming booty
house number or a funky, electro-fuelled breaks 12″.
From the ass-shaking uptempo party rocker that is Touch Your Toes, released on Fatboy Slim’s Southern Fried label and featuring co-producer Skool of Thought, with Darrison on mic duties, to Sludge Records smash Age of Dub, his melodic dubstep reworking of classic trance tune Age of Love, to his groundbreaking collaborations with jungle kingpin Brockie, drop an Ed Solo joint
and you’re guaranteed to get the party rocking. Other co-conspirators when it comes to sending down sonic weaponry include the likes of Krafty Kuts, with whom he worked on the classic
breaks and bass vibes of Bunker Buster.
Most recently, Ed released new album Bounce ‘n’ Shake with studio partner in crime Deekline, a labyrinthine 27-track eclectic tour de force sent down with the kind of assurance one might
expect from DJs who have sent bodies flying round the room at club venues across the globe for more than a decade. Ed himself has brought his unique ear for a heavy slice of wax to up for
it crowds as far afield as Canada, Russia, the UK and Australia. Never busier, and constantly in demand, this is an artist who long ago stepped out to claim his rightful place in the grand pantheon of dance music heroes.

Bring extra underware and prepare to have the shit scared out of you all over the dancefloor!
It’s been a long road for London-bred Loxy, aka Andrew Campbell, who has played a seminal part in every step of Drum & Bass’ evolution over the last two decades. He’s one of few artists that has continued to influence all elements of the Drum & Bass movement from the underground up, with no signs of stopping. Keeping his face in the background, but a strong, characteristic sound in the front, for someone like Loxy it’s never been about image, fame or hype – it’s only the music that speaks.
It was music that spoke to Loxy himself at a very young age, growing up in a house where sounds vibrated off the walls, around the clock. As he tells: “Music was very influential in our family – from dub, reggae, ragga, hip hop, soul, funk, pop, you name it. If it was good, it got played in our house.” A B-Boy and fan of hip hop and electro in the late 80s, it was only natural that he would fall into what was then dubbed a “new phenomenon”: pirate radio opened his eyes to the futuristic sounds of acid house and techno. A blink of those eyes and several mixtapes later, and Loxy became immersed in the world of rave and DJ culture, which was slowly morphing into the sounds of early Jungle. Attending events such as Telepathy (in Marshgate Lane, Stratford in London), he went deep into the sounds of Jumpin Jack Frost, Fabio, Grooverider and Rat Pack: “I was hooked,” he says.
Loxy started hunting down vinyl with insatiable dedication, and by 1990-1991, he started to share his collection and talents behind the decks. Through a friend promoting parties, he ended up on the stage at East London’s legendary Dungeons – and from there, the gigs started flying in at an unruly pace. Loxy’s name was soon spread across flyers for events that now hold their veritable place in rave history books, including Elevation, Desire, Club Jungle, Thunder and Joy. He also became a regular on various radio waves across London (such as Underground FM, Pulse FM, Chillin FM, Rude FM and Eruption FM), bringing a darker edge that was influenced by the sounds of Face Records, Reinforced and Moving Shadow.
In 1993, with a head brimming with ideas that combined his musical upbringing and a future-forward mindset, Loxy came across two likeminded artists at Brain Studios – Bizzy B and TDK. His first forays into production came hard and fast – their very first track ‘Roll Call’ became regularly played by the likes of DJ Rap, Trace and Bryan Gee. With an exacting production style, he started forming a network that connected the dots of the music that inspired him: Bay B Kane not only fed him the newest dubs, but also signed one of his tracks to his 4star record label (which went through the then-popular Whitehouse Records) – and his encounters with LTJ Bukem and Tayla revealed both their common interests in music and a healthy supply of Good Looking dubplates. It wasn’t long before his record bag was indisputable.
One of his most fated introductions came when he met Giles Mensah, aka Ink – when they joined forces, the chemistry was instant and absolute. Loxy tells that the two connected through “a shared love of the
music and similar yet varied tastes.” Their first track – ‘Submerged’ – was released on Architecture Recordings, and also held a feature spot on Kemistry and Storm’s ‘DJ Kicks’ mix compilation. From the beginnings, it was clear that destiny held much promise for the duo – and eventually they became an archetypal pair in D&B, creating some of the most essential anthems in the harder, darker, more dub- influenced terrains of the genre.
Though his productions were gaining his name more attention, Loxy’s DJ’ing never slowed up – growing from strength to strength, he always staying dedicated to the craft. As Loxy puts it himself: “I would always consider myself a DJ first and producer second, but making tunes to play was what got me motivated to pursue it more.” As Loxy and Ink came across like-minded artists at D&B events, they
befriended the likes of Digital, Spirit, Source Direct, Photek, Peshay and Kemistry and Storm. When the scene-defining Blue Note club opened in the mid-90s, it was the latter two DJs that suggested to Metalheadz leader Goldie that Loxy should be the resident. “The rest is history,” Loxy tells, which couldn’t be further from the truth: his name was locked in the D&B archives from then on, alongside the Blue Note’s legacy, even holding down the record as the only artist to DJ a whole night at the Sunday Sessions. Loxy became a mainstay on the club circuit in the early years of D&B, DJ’ing the events that would one day set the blueprint – Leisure Lounge Sessions, Hannover Grand, the Cafe De Paris Sessions, Speed, Swerve, Logical Progression, and Pure Science. His residency at Blue Note stemmed on to all of Goldie’s Metalheadz nights from that point forward (to this day), and he’s since held London residencies at Renegade Hardware and Therapy. Beyond his rotating nights, Loxy has played at all D&B events across the board, and around the world – including Exit Records, Sun & Bass, Creamfields, Fabric, Club Jungle, Desire,Elevation, One Nation, Slammin Vinyl, Valve, Breakbeat Kaos, Revolution, Legend of The Dark, Movement, The End, and Theory, among many others…the list is seemingly endless.
As a producer, Loxy’s discography is a tour through D&B history, and about as thick and chronological as it gets. It’s the attention to detail that always makes a Loxy production stand out: tough and hard-hitting, with basslines and drums intricately layered with meticulous precision. Building fierce rhythms, his sharply sculpted beats slide against different backdrops: sometimes bringing the feel of a smooth club roller, other times dropping the listener straight into the deepest end of the dancefloor. With such a vast depth in sound, it’s no wonder that over the years he’s worked with labels as varied as Good Looking Records, Exit Records, Metalheadz, Renegade Hardware, Razors Edge, Digital Soundboy, Shogun Audio and Architecture Recordings.
Always on the hunt for the next sound, Loxy started Cylon Recordings in the early 2000‘s with Dylan, as a way to revive their love of hardcore. He also went on to start a joint imprint with Keaton (of the Usual Suspects) called X-tinction Agenda, which reflects both artists’ tastes with an aim to represent and cultivate the near ‘x-tinct’ sound of what they deem “true Drum & Bass – breakbeats & sub bass.” His most recent imprint, Cx:Digital, has been a labor of love on his own, as a platform to push the D&B sound even further.
With his partnership with Ink being the most notorious, Loxy was also the founder of the infamous The Four Horsemen – with original members Ink, Dylan and Keaton, it became a global group with artists such as Gremlinz, Mutt and Outlook (to name a few). Over the years, Loxy’s also collaborated with other names dotted around the D&B spectrum, including Bad Company, Consequence, Zinc, Digital, Swift, Flatliners, Ena, Isotone, Genotype, Cern, Munk, Matt-u, D Kay, J. Dub, Usual Suspects, Universal Project and Resound.

-= DUBCONCIOUS =-
[Shambhala Music Festival / Dubslingers ]
Dubconscious has come to represent both the east and the western coast of Canada. Born in Toronto and raised on the jungle / drum’n’bass sounds permeating the city in the late 90s & early 2000s, he developed a taste for hard beats drenched in reggae vibes. 2004 brought a big move across the country to the city of Victoria, which was nurturing a fledgling breaks and jungle scene – by the end of his first year of University, he had bought his first set of Technics and the seed was planted. Bouncing back and forth between Toronto and Victoria for the next three years of school presented plenty of opportunities to play different music to new crowds, adding reggae & dancehall to his repertoire, as well dubstep – in its infancy at this point. After school the move was made back east, joining up with the Dubslingers crew in Toronto, while they were holding down Canada’s longest running dubstep weekly – Dubslingers Wednesdays at Thymeless.
Having established a name for himself in Toronto’s competitive scene, he headed west once more, this time settling in Nelson, BC. After spending two productive years in the area immersing himself in both the great outdoors & the underground party scene, he moved further west to Vancouver, where he played all across the board – dropping sets jam packed with a mash of many forms of urban & modern bass music at a wide selection of venues across the city, the province, and the country on a regular basis. Most recently he’s found himself back in Nelson BC, continuing to work closely with the Shambhala Music Festival and the new Bloom Nightclub.
Appearing in nearly every major city in Canada, and sharing the stage with a wide and varied spectrum of headliners – from Beenie Man and Barrington Levy, to Andy C, Shy FX and Dillinja to The Roots, Mixmaster Mike and Blockhead, to Gramatik , Dub FX, Glitch Mob and Beats Antique, to Bicep and Kastle, to Salva, Clicks & Whistles and the Gaslamp Killer to Truth, Plastician and Rusko – he’s proven his versatility many times over, across an array of arenas. He’s also appeared at numerous music festivals including BC’s Shambhala (7x), Bass Coast (4x), Diversity, Motion Notion, and the Victoria Ska Fest three times over – as well as Ontario’s WEMF and Harvest Festivals, and even the Dragon Festival in Granada, Spain. He curated a Sunday night weekly at The Keefer Bar in Vancouver for 3.5 years, and was also running an all-vinyl reggae & dancehall weekly for a time – Wax Wednesdays at the Waldorf – the poster for which was featured in Major Lazer & Busy Signal’s music video for “Bumaye.”

DJSS – DIRECTOR,
FORMATION RECORDS, THE WORLD OF DRUM&BASS, BASS DISCIPLES
One of the UK’s finest DJ/Producers and co-founder of Formation Records, now celebrating it’s 25 year Anniversary making it the longest running Drum&Bass label on the planet. DJ SS aka Leroy Small is an original breakbeat pioneer who has made an immense contribution to today’s drum & bass sound.
SS is one of the very select DJ / Producers who has been there right from the start, due to the hard work and dedication that he puts into his music.
When the hardcore scene exploded SS was there and hasn’t looked back. He and his partner Eidris started promoting their own parties called Total Kaos every Friday in their hometown of Leicester. They also put on one of the first large indoor parties at Donnington Park in the summer of 91. It was an amazing success and 6000 people danced till dawn.
DJ SS himself born and bred in Leicester is a self-taught scratch DJ and found fame scratching his way through the era along with break-dancing his way on the streets of Leicester. He progressed onto the “rave scene” and was one of the first on the worldwide scene to DJ his own produced tracks. Things moved quickly from there – SS taught himself how to produce a high calibre of music and also coached others to produce to equally high standards.
DJ SS has an enormous list of tracks and used various aliases. Over the years he’s had countless releases on Formation Records as well as doing remix work for other artists. He has released such tracks as ‘The Psycho E.P’, ‘Rhythm For Reasons’, ‘Breakbeat Pressure’, the Drum & Bass anthem ‘Black’, with the highlight being ‘ Lighter’ which was Formation Records best seller, reaching the number 1 spot in the Music Week dance chart and reaching number 68 in the music charts. It is a track that has remained incredibly popular and still continues to be played years on.
Not only has his label Formation during the years had many big tunes released, they have also had many big DJ/producers release records on the label. The list is strong, big and endless including Carl Cox, Grooverider, Shy FX, Ray Keith, Bryan Gee, Frost, Roni Size, Krust, Kenny Ken, Ratty, Matrix, John B, Mickey Finn, Twisted Individual and Distorted Minds.
In between this huge success he has also been the driving force behind some of the finest talent now established within the scene, his most recent sensation arriving in the form of Twisted Individual, who had made a huge impact on the scene with releases on Formation Records and sister labels Reformed and New Identity, as well as his debut album Tooled Up. He has also convinced Zen, old friend of Twisted Individual, to take the plunge and move from London to Leicester to join the Formation team after several releases on 5HQ Recordings and the last couple of years has seen his debut appearance on Formation Records with Minefield as part of the 100th release, and sister labels Reformed and New Identity. Adding to the successful list of a&r projects, DJSS is also responsible for launching the careers of successful artists like John B, Greenlaw, Multi Platinum selling artists Nero, and is continuing on that path bringing on new blood.
Fast forward to 2015 and we saw Formation events team up with the UK’s premier event company, Outbreak Festival to host Formation & World of Drum&Bass Arena’s at their massives. Simultaneously DJSS has built his World of Drum&Bass brand to become the biggest Drum&Bass events in Russia averaging over 4-6,000 people per show.
As the 25 years of Formation arrives, DJ SS enters a new chapter launching his next concept, Bass Disciples. This Gospel&Bass movement will bridge the gap of church and Bass music collide on a path of worship through a genuine music platform.

Black Sun Empire represent the finest in dark and tech fueled dance-floor drum & bass. Since bursting onto the scene back in 2000, they’ve continued to develop their own unique style and sound, releasing numerous singles as well as four full- length LPs and establishing themselves as leaders in the field. With their impressive DJ skills and inspirational productions, Black Sun Empire have reached far beyond their native Holland. They’ve toured the world over, with highlights including Glastonbury and numerous other festival appearances, and continue to build on their growing reputation as some of the most exciting and consistent performers around. Their fifth LP ‘From The Shadows’ is a 100% Drum and Bass album will be released in September 2012. This is the follow up to the hugely successful 2010 ‘Lights And Wires’ LP that demonstrated their versatility across tempos whilst still staying true to their own sound.
Borne of brothers Milan and Micha Heyboer along with René Verdult, Black Sun Empire is a DJ/producer collective based in Utrecht, The Netherlands. Since first making music together in 1993, the trio experimented with various styles until they found their musical direction around 1997 and formed Black Sun Empire. Heavily influenced by releases from the darker labels such as No U Turn, Prototype and Virus, they took the techstep drum & bass blueprint and set out to make a new sound of their own.
With a sound that was fresh, new and progressive, their early demos caught the ears of several well-es- tablished labels. Their debut release came courtesy of Rotterdam based label Piruh in 1999 with the tracks ‘Skin Deep’ and ‘Voltage’ and further release on Piruh and another Dutch imprint, DJ Esta’s “A New Dawn,” soon followed. It wasn’t long, however, before their technically proficient productions came to the attention of Trace, the long-serving DJ and techstep pioneer, and he invited Black Sun Empire to compose a remix for his label DSCi4. They took on the classic “Mutant Jazz,” and provided a remix of truly devastating proportions that announced Black Sun Empire on the UK and indeed the world scene.
Further release on DSCi4 came and were followed by remixes for SKC and Technical Itch before, in 2002, the boys decided to start a label of their own. Setup as an outlet for their increasing body of work, Black Sun Empire Recordings became home for their own productions as well as collaborations with other like- minded artists. Their first album ‘Driving Insane’ was released in 2004 to critical acclaim and featured work with the collective talents of Concord Dawn and Stu from Cause 4 Concern alongside their own material. Deft, dynamic, devastating and deranged the album announced that the day of the Dutch was dawning. Supported by a mix CD, it showcased their sound in style and coincided with a highly successful world tour, taking in dates across the UK, Europe, USA and Australia.
Motivated by the massive response they had received, the boys followed up with their second long-player, ‘Cruel and Unusual’, in 2005. Raising the banner of the Black Sun Empire even higher than before, the LP featured further collaborative work with yet more high-profile artists including Noisia, Corrupt Souls and Kemal. Feeling the urge to satisfy other sides of their collective psyche, a sister label was established in the form of “oBSEssions.” Designed to cater for atmospheric, unusual and funky flavours, this label is certainly no lightweight and proven itself as one to watch with releases from the likes of Chris SU, Noisia and SKC so far alongside newer names.
Their third LP, ‘Endangered Species,’ drew together creative minds from across the drum & bass scene with input from Noisia, Bad Robot, Chris SU, Jade, State Of Mind, D.Kay, Optiv and Audio all featuring alongside BSE. The resulting tour was a resounding success worldwide with nearly 100 gigs and was soon followed by the ‘My Lightyear LP’ Tour alongside Telemetrik, to promote his debut album on BSE Recordings. In 2009, BSE stayed on a roll with a whole raft of releases across their labels including collaborations with State Of Mind, N.Phect and Eye- D and opened their dubstep label, “Shadows of the Empire.”
November 2010 brought the release of their fourth LP ‘Lights and Wires’ and an accompanying world tour, taking them to the USA, Australia, New Zealand and beyond. ‘Lights And Wires’ displayed their incredible versatility across tempo’s and genres and cemented their reputation again as unique, talented artists. Black Sun Empire continued to grow their musical reach in the first half of 2012 with a remix of Noisia’s ‘Thurs- day’ for the Mau5trap release of the Noisia album, plus a high profile collaboration with Foreign Beggars entitled ‘Solace One’ for their ‘Harder They Fall’ EP.
Never losing touch with their roots, Black Sun Empire continue to promote their bi-monthly event ‘Black- out’ in their home town of Utrecht which has recently celebrated it’s ninth birthday. This well-established event has attracted some of the best in DJ talent from across the globe and regularly draws crowds of up to 1,000 people, and has now spread to high profile residencies in Brussels and London.
The Black Sun Empire musical and creative strength leads to their 2012 album release ‘From The Shadows’ scheduled for September. With the album containing 12 original songs geared firmly toward the dancefloor, BSE delivers the perfect Drum and Bass experience. Black Sun Empire’s sound on ‘From The Shadows’ is as unmistakable as it is without compromise. A combination of dark and impressive themes, vocals, tough electronics, and memorable melodies. Collabs with Noisia, Audio, Foreign Beggars, Amatorski, Rido, Thomas Oliver, Youthstar and N.Phect showcase their expanding horizon. Musically, ‘From the Shadows’ sees Black Sun Empire move towards exciting areas.
Building a name for themselves in the last decade as true innovators of the Drum and Bass scene as we know it today, Black Sun Empire continuously capture the interest of a new generation of drum and bass lovers while maintaining one of the most committed fanbases in electronic music.

KENNY KEN (Mix n Blen)
During the mid- to late 1990s, Kenny Ken became one of the U.K.’s prominent Jungle / drum and bass DJs, owning and operating the Mix & Blen’ label. During this time he earned respect throughout the scene and gained popularity for his diverse and entertaining DJ sets. He started DJing in 1989 during the acid house movement, inspired by the early warehouse parties. He rose to prominence with his first big track, “Everyman”, and winning the inaugural Jungle Sound Clash in 1994.
